Vince Lombardi, who passed away from cancer in late 1970 at the age of 57, is remembered with the Lombardi football trophy. The trophy, which was formerly known as the “World Professional Football Championship Trophy,” was given to the Baltimore Colts during Super Bowl V against the Dallas Cowboys the following year and now bears the coach’s name.
THE SUPER BOWL TROPHY WAS CREATED BY WHO?
In order to create a football trophy for the league’s champions, NFL (National Football League) commissioner Pete Rozelle contacted Tiffany & Co. in America in 1966. Oscar Riedner, a vice president at Tiffany & Co., took it upon himself to design the trophy despite having no background in football.
Later that day, Riedner purchased a football from FAO Schwarz in order to learn more about the game. He tore apart the cereal box the next morning while eating a bowl of cornflakes, stood it up, and set the football in kickoff position on top. Later, Riedner gave Rozelle a cocktail napkin with a sketch of the Vince Lombardi Trophy’s design on it while they were having lunch together.
